Yatala prison is located in the Northfield suburb of Adelaide.

Information recorded includes prisoner name, alias, register number, date received and where from, date of conviction, offence, at what Court, judge or magistrate name, sentence, place of origin, date of arrival in South Australia, name of ship, where from, previous convictions in the Colony, last employer, friends in Colony and where residing, marital status, religion, education, occupation, age, height, weight, build, complexion, and physical description identifying marks or features. Also recorded is criminal history, general remarks, and date of discharge. From 1883 photographs of the prisoners are usually included.

In volume 4 a second sequence of register numbers was introduced. The original sequence continued and related to prisoners committed by the Supreme Court, the second sequence began at 1 and related to prisoners committed by the Police Court. These two sequences were maintained through the rest of the series with the Supreme Court sequence starting from the beginning of the volume running towards the middle and the Police Court sequence starting at the back of the volume running towards the middle.
