"The yearbook evolved from an annual series titled, Catalogue of the Officers and Students..., published by the students in most years from 1840 until 1874. ... Although the Garnet descended directly from the student edition of the Catalogue, it had other precursors. From 1854 until 1871, the sophomore class published an annual ... that served as a kind of yearbook. From 1857 until at least 1897, the senior class usually commissioned a class album consisting entirely of photographs ... The Garnet began publishing student photographs in its 1902 volume ..."--Somers, Wayne. Encyclopedia of Union College history. 2003.
