"The town of Kanawha was platted in the year of 1899 when the M. and St. L. railroad was extended from Belmond to Algona. At that time there were three Lutheran rural congregations: St. John's, St. Olaf and West Lake...A meeting was called in 1900 to organize a congregation, but the records of the meeting were lost. Another meeting was called on February 4th, 1901. At that time the Kanawha Norwegian Lutheran Congregation was organized by Reverend H. C. Holm...He also served the St. John's, St. Olaf and Belmond congregations.".

In 1916 Kanawha Lutheran Church and St. John's joined to form a parish.
