James Green Short was born in 1837 in Menard County, Illinois. He migrated to California in 1850 with his father, James Short, and his brother, John S. Short. He and his wife, Elizabeth Armstrong, had nine children. He died at Ukiah, California, in 1895. Descendants lived in California, Colorado, and elsewhere.
