Notes

The Circuit Court of the Northern District of California was abolished in 1911. The cases were given to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, in 1912. Courts are located in San Francisco.

The land grants were originally made from 1769-1846 by the Spanish and the Mexican governments, and later confirmed by the U.S. government from 1852-1910 through the Board of California Land Commissioners.

Title to more than 8.8 million acres, nearly 14,000 square miles, of California land was based on 588 grants that were originally made by Spanish or Mexican authorities from 1769 to 1846 and later confirmed by the U.S. Government. Litigation concerning the land titles began immediately after the area was ceded by Mexico in 1848, and is continuing.

Contains private land-grant case files, 1852-1910, of the Circuit Court of the Northern District of California (abolished in 1911), which were given to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in 1912.
