Starting in 1960 all delayed birth certificates were filed with the regular birth certificates, the numbering of this series starts at 35,540. After 1960 only births occurring in the county could be recorded in that county, no out-of-state births were recorded after this date. When searching the certificates be sure to use the number on the back of each certificate and not the state certificate number on the front of each certificate as a reference guide.

The birth and death index (volume 1) is mislabeled as birth and death record. It actually serves as an index to the birth and death certificates. This series is the only index to delayed births filed from 1942-1984 and also indexes those filed from 1939-1942. From 1939-1959 delayed births could be recorded in any county of the Texas for births that occurred anywhere in the world, as long as the applicant was at the time of filing a resident of the county where he filed his out-of-state birth. Delayed births are either preceded or followed by the letter "D" or are listed in the index with only a name, certificate number and filing date. The birth index is followed by the death index.

Amendments to births are filed by the certificate number which is in the first column of each birth record. The certificate number will have a letter added after it and be filed after the regular birth certificate of the same number. For example: a birth entry with a certificate number of 25 and a notation that an amendment has been filed would be located in the birth certificates under number 25 A or 25 B, etc. Be sure to check all the different letters under each number to find the appropriate amendment.

The birth entries for 1931-1935 serve as an index to the birth certificates. Use the certificate number in the first column to locate the proper birth certificate.

The index to birth records v. 1A A-K indexes regular births from 1903- 1942 and delayed births from 1860-1942, which were filed from 1939- 1942. For all delayed births check all indexes because both the regular and delayed births are indexed together because at certain time periods they are interfiled and can be difficult to locate by number only. The index to birth records v. 1B L-Z indexed only 1903- 1935 regular births found in the county court clerks office. Check all other indexes for delayed birth certificates to find those of 1903-1935. For those not recorded in the county courthouse records see the indexes for Wichita Falls City Hall or write the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Austin, Texas.

If the record column of the index says "County" and the book and page numbers are blank, but the certificate number column contains a number, use the following system to determine which collection the record is found in. If the birth occurred before 1931 then this number is a delayed birth certificate number. If the birth occurred from 1931-June 1939 and the certificate number is less than 2100 then it could be either a delayed birth certificate number or a birth certificate number and both collections should be checked. If the birth occurred between 1931 and June 1939 and the certificate number is greater than 2075 it is most likely a delayed birth certificate number. If the birth occurred after June 1939 and the certificate number is more than 5000 then this is a delayed birth certificate number. If the birth occurred after June 1939 and the number is less than 5000 then this may be either a delayed birth certificate or a birth certificate so check both collections. If the record column says "County" and the book and page columns are filled in then this record is found in the County Courthouse. If the record column reads "City" then the record is found at the Wichita Falls City Hall. If the record column says "BVS" then the record is housed at the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Austin, Texas.
