William Dews Sr. (1751-1835), of English ancestral lineage, enlisted in the Revolutionary Army at Charlottesville, Virginia in February 1776, and was captured by the British at Germantown near Philadelphia in October 1777. He was discharged from military service in August 1778, having been released or exchanged by the British. He returned to Virginia, married Sarah Hendrick, and they moved to land in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, West Virginia, Florida and elsewhere.
