This county was established 29 Dec. 1841 out of Dale County and has two courthouses, one at Elba, and a second at Enterprise, established in 1907. The first courthouse was at Wellborn and was destroyed by fire in 1851. In 1863 a band of Confederate deserters and other renegades known as "Ward's Raiders" burned the new courthouse at Elba (5 years old) as well as the bridge across Pea River in a failed effort to escape the Home Guard. Records since 1863 at Elba were entirely submerged by a flood of Pea River in march 1929 when floodwaters reached the twelve foot mark the records vault wall. Some records survived better that others. Nearly all show evidence of water damage.
Each volume individually indexed.
