Thomas Putnam (ca.1590-ca.1659) and his family emigrated from England to Gloucester County, Virginia in 1647. Descendants lived in Virginia, North and South Carolina, Kentucky, Oklahoma and elsewhere. Some ancestors and many descendants spelled the surname as "Putman.".
