Ancestors of the author and her husband. Mary Ellen Bird was born in 1919 at Magnolia, Arkansas, the daughter of John Whitaker Bird, Jr. (1889-1965) and Mary Wilson Bird (b. 1897). She married Charles Green Colquitt, Jr. in 1936. Charles Green Colquitt, Jr. was born in 1911 at Shreveport, Louisiana, the son of Charles Green Colquitt (1876-1941) and Bobbie Mae Colquitt Colquitt (1882-1957).

Ancestors include: John Colquitt (1735-1800) of Virginia and Oglethorpe County, Georgia -- Anthony Colquitt (1710-1774) of Halifax County, Virginia -- Joseph Gray Wilson, M.D. (1811-1866) of Virginia, Alabama, and Arkansas -- William Robert McGovern (1805-1865) of North Carolina and Alabama -- Uriah Willson (1816-1886) of Alabama -- Samuel Lynchfield Gladney (1803-1875) of Tennessee and Arkansas, and his father, James Gladney -- John Johnson (1795-ca. 1850) of Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.
