The name of the church, built in 1841, was originally St. Bean's and was located in the Ohio area of Antigonish County. The mission extended from Marshy Hope in Pictou County to Wine Harbour in Guysborough County. A new church was built in 1867 and the name of the church and parish was changed to St. Joseph.
