"The collection includes minutes of meetings of the Methodist Associated Church's governing society. This group was begun by Methodists expelled from the Methodist Episcopal Church because of differences concerning the leadership. In the back is a list of members of the church. Laying loosely in the volume is what is probably part of a sermon. There are also letters (1825-1828) about lay representation in church affairs, which was the cause of the 1828 expulsion. This was the beginning of the Methodist Protestant Church which existed as a separate entity until reuniting with the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in forming The Methodist Church in 1939. -- P.
