The certificates were presented in the clerk's office of the Circuit Court or the county clerk's office. These forms or certificates were approved by the Virginia War History Commission and may have been part of a project for this commission.
Dates shown in the title are registration dates. The certificates and discharges for World War I were for men who enlisted or were inducted into the service during 1915-1919 and discharged 1917-1921. The discharge for the Spanish-American War was for a man who enlisted during 1898 and discharged 1899. The few discharges for World War II were for men who enlisted 1941-1942 and discharged in 1942-1943.
Contains certificates, or discharges attached to the certificates. Certificates were for men who served in WW I and give name with personal, enlistment, discharge, service and other record information. Information is not always complete. Discharges were mainly for men who served in WW I, but a few were for the Spanish-American War and WW II. They give name, rank and regiment, reason and date of discharge, and sometimes other information such as age and occupation at time of enlistment, physical description, service information, etc.
