Some of these records are faded and difficult to read. The census reports from 1912-1917 are microfilmed copies of photocopies, so many of them are faded.

The index to these records was compiled by rearranging the census reports for 1912-1930 in alphabetical order according to the name of the parent or guardian. The index for 1912-1917 was made using photocopies of the original records. These copies of the records from 1912-1917 were not refilmed in the original order. The records used in the index for 1918-1930 are refilmed in their original order by school district. No index was created for the records from 1931-1934. They are arranged by school districts. The more recent records from the largest school districts are listed at the end of the film notes.

Information given in the census reports from 1912-1913 includes name of parent, address, school district number and the date of birth (day, month, year) and age of each child attending school. Information in census reports from 1914-1934 includes name of parent, name of post office or township, range and section or street number, school district number and the name, birth date (day, month, year), age, race and sex of each child attending school. The reports from 1913-1934 also list the name of the tribe if the parent was an Indian or freedman.
