Thomas Melton (1770/1780-1839/1840) was born in North Carolina or Virginia. He married Anna in 1806 in Washington County, Virginia. In 1820 he was in Tennessee and in 1822 he bought land in Jefferson County, Alabama. Anna later died in 1868 in Rusk County, Texas. James Madison Melton (1816-1898) was born in Tennessee and later married Mary Sheffield, daughter of Everett M. Sheffield and Susanna Sheffied in 1839 in Itawamba, Mississippi. Johnson ancestry is traced to Richard B. Johnson (1803-1865) who was born in South Carolina, married Ladoska E.A. Hopper, and died in Itawamba, Mississippi. Sheffield ancestry is traced to John Sheffield, Sr. (ca. 1725-1796) who was born in Henrico County, Virginia and later died in Moore County, North Carolina. The Fritz family is traced to Hans Ulrich Fritz, born in 1708 who came to Philadelphia and took the oath of allegiance in 1738. Johnstons are traced to Absalom Johnston, born ca. 1770 in South Carolina and died ca. 1844 in Kentucky.
