The Second Regiment of the West Virginia Cavalry Volunteers was originally raised in 1861 in Ohio. Rejected because Ohio's cavalry quota was full, the men applied to the provisional governor of western Virginia who accepted them. The Second Regiment of Loyal Virginia Volunteer Cavalry was then created and fought in the Civil War under several different generals. They joined their last general, who was General George A. Custer, in 1864 and was probably mustered out in 1865.
