Declarations of intention are often called "first papers" wherein a person declares his intention to become a citizen of the U.S. Later records may contain more information.

The naturalization papers granting U.S. citizenship were often called "Second papers". In 1906 the form was called Petition for naturalization, also, Petition and record.

Each volume is separately indexed. Each record has a volume number assigned by the microfilmer and a volume number in parenthesis (-) which is the volume number found on the book.
