Article:
Tags on photos and documents identify the people who are in them. Tags can also ensure that the photo or document appears with the person’s record in Family Tree.
Make sure you have permission from all living individuals who appear in memories that are set to public. Public memories, including the names of any people who are tagged, can be viewed by any user of FamilySearch.
You can tag up to 1,000 memories to a person in Family Tree. No limit exists for the number of tags for a given photo or document. However, when you add a tag to a photo, start each tag in a different place within the photo. The system does not allow you to put a new tag on top of an existing one. If a photo has a full-screen tag, shrink it in order to add additional tags.
You can add a tag to a memory, regardless of who uploaded it.
Steps (website)
On the website, tags are rectangles with a name beneath them.
- Sign in to FamilySearch and click Memories.
- In the drop-down, click Gallery.
- Click Filter and select the memory types you want to see (Photos, Stories, Documents, Audios).
- (Optional) To see only untagged photos or documents, select Memories not tagged.
- Click the photo or document that you want to tag.
- In the bottom right corner, click the Tag People button.
- In the text box, enter the name of the person. As you type, the names of your ancestors and relatives in Family Tree appear.
- If the correct name appears, click it. The memory is now attached to that name in Family Tree.
- If the correct name does not appear, finish typing the name and click Add New.
- Repeat for everyone in the photo or document.
Note: You can also go to the Person Page of a record and review or edit tags.

- (Optional) To reposition the tag, tap in the circle, and drag it to the desired position.
