How do I add a historical record to my source box?

You can save historical records found on FamilySearch to your Source Box for future reference and use. The Source Box is accessible only from the full website.

You can add records starting from either the indexed information ("record details") or the image.

Steps (website)

Add to Source Box from Records Details

  1. In FamilySearch Historical Records, search for a person.
  2. In the Search Results list, click the correct person.
  3. Click View Record.
    • Note: clicking the person’s name from the Search Results may sometimes take you directly to the record page, so this step may be unnecessary.
  4. Once you are on the record page, in the dark banner that includes the name, click Save.
  5. Click Save to Source Box.
  6. Choose a folder or leave the folder as "Home". A folder must be selected in order to save to source box.
  7. If desired, adjust the title and add notes.
  8. Click Save.

Add to Source Box from Record Image (New Image Viewer)

  1. Navigate to a historical image. It will open in the Image Viewer.
  2. Above the image, just to the left of the Information icon, you'll see either a Save Record button or a Paperclip icon. The option that appears depends on your screen size.
  3. Choose a folder or leave the folder as "Home". A folder must be selected in order to save to source box.
  4. If desired, adjust the title, and add notes.
  5. Click Save.

Add to Source Box from Record Image (Old Image Viewer)

  1. Navigate to a historical image. It will open in the Image Viewer.
  2. Above the image, click Source Box.
  3. Click Save to Source Box.
  4. Choose a folder or leave the folder as "Home". A folder must be selected in order to save to source box.
  5. If desired, adjust the title, and add notes.
  6. Click Save.
