From my source box, how do I attach a source to a person in Family Tree?

While your source box is open, you can attach a source to a person in Family Tree.

There are two main ways to attach a source that is already in your source box to a person in Family Tree. One way is by going through Family Tree, but keep reading if you want to know how to start from your source box.

Steps (website)

  1. While signed in to FamilySearch, in the top-right portion of the screen, click your name.
  2. Click Source Box
  3. Find the source that you want to attach to a person.
  4. Click Attach.
  5. Click the tab for the kind of search you want to use to find the person:
    • Find by Name. Enter a name and other information.
      • Including an alternate name can help you find a person using nicknames, married names, and other alternate names.
      • Searching for a birth event searches for both birth and christening information.
      • Searching for a death event searches for both death and burial information.
      • You can use wildcards in the names of people and places. Enter * to replace zero or more characters. Enter ? to replace one character.
    • Find by ID. Enter a Family Tree ID number.
    • Recents. Select a person from your Recents list.
  6. Click Next or Attach.
  7. In the list of search results, find the correct person.
  8. Click Attach Source.
  9. Explain your reason for attaching it.
  10. Click Attach.

Steps (mobile app)

Currently, the Family Tree and Memories mobile apps do not include the source box feature. Visit the FamilySearch website to manage your sources.
