Dovgan Family History

Dovgan Name Meaning

The surname derives from the nickname, which apparently originates from the Ukrainian adjective dovgy (Eng. «long», «high»). Thus, the nickname Dovgan could be given to a lanky, tall person.

The surname is common in Ukraine, as well as all across Russia (mostly in the Krasnodar Territory, the Rostov and Sverdlovsk Regions), Belarus, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

The last name can be found in manuscripts of the 17th century. Thus, it appeared in the Zaporizhian Army Register of 1649. It was common for Cossacks, who served in the Bratslav Regiment. Besides, people under this name were mentioned in Cossack list of the Vladikavkaz Cossack Regiment, compiled in 1843.
