Abner Gray was born in Rhode Island in 1820. He was both a sailor and farmer. He married Mercy Etta Pratt and they were the parents of eight children. He settled in Illinois before making a trip to California for the Gold Rush, and eventually returned their to live. Later his children moved further west settling in Nebraska, Wyoming, and elsewhere.
