Notes

Joseph Shields (ca. 1765-1847), a Revolutionary War soldier, was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, the son of William Shields (1740-1791). He married Sarah Harrison in 1787 in Greene County, Tennessee. They had ten children, ca. 1788-ca. 1809. The family lived in Washington County, Tennessee. Record chiefly consists of public documents and excerpts from compiled books concerning Joseph Shield and some of his descendants.
