William Jefferson McMurtry (1858-1940), son of Benjamin Franklin McMurtry and Harriet Sapp, was born in Benton Co., Mo., and died in Archer Co., Texas. He married 1877 in Benton Co., Louisa Frances Williams (1859-1946), daughter of John Lankston Williams and Margaret Ellen Skaggs. She was born in Benton Co., Mo., and died in Wichita Falls, Texas. They were parents of twelve children. The earliest known direct ancestor was Samuel McMurtry (1744-1796) of Augusta Co., Va. He was the son of Alexander McMurtry and Sarah Todd (or Hutton?). He was married to Jean Martin in 1762. Family members live in Texas, Missouri, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Idaho, Utah, California and elsewhere.
