"The Montgomery papers are in the possession of Joe Sharp, local historian, of Sevierville, Tenn. who is a descendant of Alexander Montgomery and whose home is on part of the old Montgomery estate."--Introd.

"Alexander Montgomery died 12/19/1817 at his home near Sevierville, Tennessee. His wife Margaret b. between 1750 and 60 ... died 12/12/1830. They settled in the late 1700's on 263 1/2 acres on the West fork of Little Pigeon River."--Introd. Descendants and relatives lived in Tennessee, Missouri and elsewhere.
In addition to Montgomery family information, the papers include a partial tax list of 1820 or 1822 for Sevier County, Tennessee. Also included is a school census for 1892 apparently taken by Robert A. Montgomery. Names in these two items are not included in the index.
