John Porter Henson III was born in 1922 at Geirard, Kansas, the son of John Porter Henson, Jr. (1894-1934) and Gladys Margaret de Venny Henson (1896-1935). He married Sarah Winslow Hodgdon in 1947 at Lakewood, Ohio. They have a daughter and two sons, born 1953-1956 at Elyria, Ohio.
Ancestors include William Henson (b. 1792) of Wythe County, Virginia, and Knox County, Tennessee; Thomas DeVenny (1789-1886) of Ireland and Virginia; and Nicholas Hodsdon (1612-1947) of England and Hingham, Massachusetts. Grandchildren of Nicholas Hodsdon changed the spelling of their name to Hodgdon.
