Early Van Amburgh ancestors came mainly from Wales. The earliest known ancestor is Benjamin Lewis Van Amburgh. In 1793, in Prince Edward County, Virginia, Benjamin married Charles Price's widow, Elizabeth (Fowlkes) Price. Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Sarah Jennings Fowlkes, born in 1764, in Amelia County, Virginia. Her Jennings ancestors were English. Elizabeth and Benjamin settled in New Madrid District of the Louisiana Territory, and had three children. Benjamin died in 1806 or 1807 in New Madrid District, Missouri. Elizabeth died after 1823. .
