How should I index certificates and registers?

For certificate-type documents, always be sure to move the image around the screen to view the entire image before beginning to index. Sometimes another certificate is below or to the side of the one you initially see on the indexing screen.

To index a certificate:

  • Review the project instructions and field helps to see which pieces of information to include and how to enter the information.
  • Review the field helps for the fields you index.

To index registers:

  • Registers, ledgers, and census-type documents have information for many people all on the same image.
  • The vital information is in rows and columns. Usually, each row represents one person or a single entry.
  • Batches such as registers might have one or more images, with each image having several rows or entries.
  • The banner at the top of the data entry area displays the number of images in the batch. The image gallery at the bottom of the image area shows any additional images.
