How do I move sources to a different person in Family Tree?

If you find a source attached to the wrong person, you can attach it to a different record.

Steps (website)

  1. Navigate to the Person page of the individual to whom the record is incorrectly attached.
  2. Click the Sources tab.
  3. Click the source title.
  4. Click Review Attachments.
  5. Click Detach for each person for whom the record is not a valid source.
  6. On the same source linker page, click Not your Family? Find your Family.
  7. Enter the ID of the correct person, or click the ID in the Possible Matches list.
  8. Review and attach the source.

Steps (mobile app)

In the mobile app, you can detach the record. The system does not provide an option to attach the record to another person. If you want to attach the source to a different person, use the FamilySearch.org website.

  1. Navigate to the Person page of the person showing the incorrect source.
  2. Tap Sources.
  3. Tap the title of the source.
  4. Tap Review Attachments.
  5. If multiple people appear on the record, tap the name of the person you want to detach from the record.
  6. Scroll to the bottom and tap Detach.
  7. Enter a reason and tap Detach.
  8. At the top of the screen, you could see other people to whom the source is attached. To remove the source from others, tap the relationship at the top (Father, Mother, Sibling, Spouse). Detach as you did for the initial person.

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

Currently, Family Tree Lite does not offer the Sources feature.
