Can I merge duplicates of living and confidential people in Family Tree?

You can merge duplicates of living or confidential people in Family Tree as long as they are in the same private tree or family group tree.

Duplicates must be in the same tree

  • You cannot merge duplicates if one is in your private tree and the other is in a family group tree.
  • You cannot merge duplicates if one is in your private tree and the other is in another user's private tree.
  • You cannot merge duplicates if one is in your private tree and the other is in the public tree.
  • You cannot merge duplicates if one is in a family group tree and the other is in the public tree.
  • You cannot merge duplicates if they are in different family group trees.

Duplicates must both be either living or deceased

If a person in your private tree or family group tree has died, add the death information to the profile, then merge duplicates. 

Use Merge By ID

Duplicates of living and confidential people may not show up when searching for duplicates in Family Tree. Use the Merge By ID option in the Tools section of the person page.
