How do I change the settings in the Family Tree mobile app?

Use the Family Tree app settings to control features and preferences. When you make changes, be sure to tap Save.

Note: You cannot update your recovery email or recovery mobile number from the mobile app. To change these settings, you must sign in to the FamilySearch website.

Steps (Android)

In the Android Family Tree mobile app:

  1. Tap the three lines in the top left.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. On the Settings page, you find the following sections:
    1. App: Customize general app settings, including:
      • Save photos to gallery: Saves a copy of any new photo to your gallery on the device.
      • Theme: Choose light, dark, or system default.
      • Expand Record Hints (Experienced Researchers Only): Include record hints that may or may not match your ancestor.
    2. Account: View and update account details, including your name, phone number, and email. You can also choose what contact information appears on your public FamilySearch profile.
    3. Profile: View what information other FamilySearch users can see about you, including your name and place. You can also add or change your portrait photo.
    4. Subscriptions: Choose the types of notifications that you wish to receive.
    5. Notifications: Tap each category to customize notifications.
    6. Advanced: Download your pedigree or clear cache.

Steps (Apple iOS)

In the Apple iOS Family Tree mobile app:

  1. Tap the three lines (More) in the bottom-right.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. On the Settings page, you find the following sections at the top:
    1. App: Customize general app settings, including:
      1. Enable Multiple Screens: Choose whether you want the ability to have multiple windows open in the app.
      2. Offline Pedigree: Tap Download Pedigree to save a six-generation pedigree chart to your app, allowing you to view it offline.
      3. Theme: Light or dark mode is set according to your device's settings. Access the iOS Settings app to change your theme.
    2. Account: View and update account details, including your name, phone number, and email. You can also choose what contact information appears on your public FamilySearch profile.
    3. Profile: View what information other FamilySearch users can see about you, including your name and place. You can also add or change your portrait photo.

    5. Permissions: Manage privacy and visibility settings:
      • Choose whether your profile information can appear in Directory Searches.
      • Enable or disable Relationship Viewing, which lets others see how they are related to you and any shared ancestors.
