Military records of the British Army, 1914-1920 (surnames S)

These records are still being filmed. The projected completion date is sometime in 2001. To speed inputting of the records the collection has been divided into separate catalog entries by letters of the alphabet. Letters which are not included have not yet been filmed.

These records are referred to as the "Burnt Documents". About 70 per cent of these records were destroyed during the Blitz in World War II. Many of the remaining documents were badly damaged, but most can be read. Many documents are filed out of order. Stray documents often appear in the middle of totally unrelated files. A second collection of these records was acquired from the Ministry of Pensions. These records represent about 8 per cent of the enlisted men serving during this time. They are cataloged in separate entry which lists 4946 rolls of microfilm. There is a third collection of these records composed of files which were removed from the main file and not returned (WO 364). Records of females serving in the Army are found in a separate entry (WO 398).

These are the service records of men who were discharged from about 1914 to 1920. Many of them began their service many years before 1914. The files include name, birthdate, residence, enlistment and discharge dates. May also include medical records, physical description, next of kin, honors, disciplinary actions, correspondence,etc. .
