The original records were microfilmed in the 1950s and were destroyed after filming. Some index cards were not microfilmed. See pages 4-5 of the introductory material to find the soundex codes on those cards not microfilmed.

"On the 165 rolls of this microfilm publication, M1480, are reproduced card manifests of over 1 million alien arrivals at Buffalo, Lewiston, Niagara Falls, and Rochester, New York, from 1902 to 1954. Some citizen arrivals are also included. The bulk of the arrivals were at Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The cards are arranged by soundex code and include permanent, temporary, statistical and nonstatistical arrivals. These records are part of the Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Record Group (RG) 85." -- P. 1.

The cards were filmed in two columns. In order to read the cards in the 2nd column, the microfilm reader lens will have to be rotated 180 degrees.
