The original wills and will books of the Principal Registry of Ireland 1858-1904 and the original wills from the eleven District Registries 1858-1900 had been deposited at the Public Record Office, Four Courts, Dublin. They were nearly all destroyed by fire in 1922. The will books remaining in the District Registries were called in to the Record Office after the fire, but these books do not contain all wills proved in their years. Prior to 1858, probates were handled by ecclesiastical courts: The Prerogative Court of the Archbishop of Armagh had jurisdiction over all persons with goods valued at more than 5 pounds in more than one diocese; the Consistory Courts had jurisdiction over persons within their diocese and up to 5 pounds in any other. Nearly all original and register copies of these wills were destroyed in the Four Courts fire also. Indexes to most of these wills remain, along with a very few will books, grant books and day books of the Prerogative Court.
