Federal policy to reduce livestock in order to conserve Navajo grazing lands was a little known aspect of the conservation programs of the Depression era. The aim of the program was to reduce the livestock industry by half. Effects of the policy on the Navajo were profound. It was enforced on what had been autonomous groups of Navajo by the federal government and by the tribal council which, up to that point in their history, was unknown to most Navajos. The program continued for about 10 years. These interviews give insight into the lives of Navajos during a crucial period in their modern history and provide some personal and genealogical information about the individuals interviewed and their families.
