How do I use FamilySearch memories to preserve my ancestors' life stories?

FamilySearch Memories helps you preserve the photos, stories, documents, and audio file recordings about your ancestors. You can use memories on the FamilySearch website, in the Family Tree, and in the FamilySearch mobile apps. 

Steps (website)

The FamilySearch website has the most complete set of features for using Memories.
 

  1. While signed in to FamilySearch, near the top of the screen, click Memories.
  2. Click Gallery, People, or Find
    • Click Gallery to do do the following:
      • Upload new photos, documents, and audio files.
      • Add stories about your ancestors.
      • View the memories you have uploaded.
      • Annotate the memories you have uploaded with titles, descriptions, and events.
      • Add tags that connect memories to people in Family Tree.
      • Listen to audio files that you uploaded.
      • Organize your memories into albums.
      • Archive memories after you have finished annotating and tagging them.
      • Like memories.
    • To view personal albums for the people you tag or who are your relatives, click People.
    • To search for people, places, events, or document types, click Find.
  3. While displaying a photo, story, document, or audio file, click Open in a New Tab display it in a new tab of your browser.

Steps (Memories mobile app)

The FamilySearch Memories app works best for recording memories about your ancestor and uploading them to FamilySearch.

The Memories mobile app automatically opens to the Gallery, where you can do the following:

  • Upload new photos, documents, and audio files.
  • Add stories about your ancestors.
  • View the memories you have uploaded.
  • Annotate the memories you have uploaded with titles, descriptions, and events.
  • Add tags that connect memories to people in Family Tree.
  • Listen to audio files that you uploaded.
  • Organize your memories into albums.
  • Archive memories after you have finished annotating and tagging them.
  1. Open the menu for further options.
    • Apple iOS: Tap the 3 dots in the bottom right corner to view Archive. Albums is found on the bottom banner.
    • Android: Tap the 3 lines in the top left corner to view Albums or Archive.
  2. Archive—Secondary folder to move and maintain memory items when all annotating (adding title and description and attaching to persons in Family Tree) and tagging are complete.
  3. Albums—Create albums to organize your memories by people, place, or event.

 Currently, the People and Find features are not available for the mobile app.

Steps (mobile app)

In the Family Tree mobile app, you can see the memories that you and others have uploaded about your ancestors.
 

  1. Open the Family Tree mobile app menu to view the Gallery.
    • Apple iOS: Tap More in the bottom right corner, then Memories
    • Android: Tap the 3 lines in the top left corner, then My Memories.
  2. This opens the Memories mobile app. Gallery includes the items below:
    • All—Upload, view, and edit all memory items you added.
    • Photos—Upload, view, and edit photos that you added (camera icon).
    • Stories—Add new stories, or view and edit stories that you previously added (open book icon).
    • Documents—Upload new documents, or view and edit documents you previously added (open page icon).
    • Audio—Upload new audio files, or listen to audio files that you previously added (microphone icon).
    • Open the menu for further options.
  3. For Archive and Album features, use the following steps.
    • Apple iOS: Tap the 3 dots in the bottom right corner to view Archive. Albums is found on the bottom banner.
    • Android: Tap the 3 lines in the top left corner to view Albums or Archive.
      • Archive—Secondary folder to move and maintain memory items when all annotating (adding title and description and attaching to persons in Family Tree) and tagging are complete.
      • Albums—Create albums to organize your memories by people, place, or event.

 Currently, the People and Find features are not available for the mobile app.

  1. For memories about a specific ancestor, use the following steps.
    • Apple iOS: In the bottom banner, tap Tree, and then tap an individual.
    • Android: Tap the 3 lines in the top left corner, tap Pedigree, and then tap an individual.
  2. In the name banner, tap Memories.
  3. To add a memory, tap the green plus sign (+).

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

Currently, Family Tree Lite does not support the Memories feature.
