How do I tag a source in Family Tree to a specific piece of information?

In Family Tree, you can tag a source to show that it supports a specific piece of vital information about a person. For example, you can tag a birth record to show that it provides evidence for a person’s name, sex, and birth.

You can add or remove tags in the Sources or Details section.

Steps (website)

In the Sources tab

Before you start: Adding tags from the Sources section allows you to tag each source individually.

  1. While signed in to FamilySearch.org, navigate to the Person page where the source appears.
  2. Click the Sources tab.
  3. Click the title of the source that you want to edit.
  4. Click + Add Tag. A list of available tags appears.
  5. Click each tag that applies to the source. If the tag you want to add does not appear, go to the Other Information Tags, and click + Add Tag. If you see a message: "All events and facts have been tagged", you cannot add more tags. Otherwise, click either + Add Alternate Name or + Add Residence. Select the alternate name or residence tags that you want to add.
  6. To remove tags, click the highlighted tags to deselect them.
  7. Click Save.

In the Details tab

Before you start: Adding tags from the Details section lets you add the same tag to a bunch of sources all at once.

  1. While signed in to FamilySearch.org, navigate to the Person page where you want to tag sources.
  2. Click the Details tab.
  3. To the right of the information for which you want to tag sources, click the pencil icon.
  4. In the right panel of the pop-up menu, it lists sources that are already tagged with that tag. To tag more, click Tag Sources.
  5. A list appears of all sources attached to that person. Click the check box next to each source that you want to tag. To remove a tag, click the check box again so the check mark is gone.
  6. Click Save.
