How do I remove sources from people in Family Tree?

You can detach any source attached to a person, even if another contributor added the source.

Before you start

  • A source attached to multiple people must be detached from each person individually. Carefully review each person before detaching a source.
  • Detaching a source removes it from the person or relationship for the person.
  • A detached source remains in the Source Box of the contributor.
  • If you want an email notification when changes are made to a person, click the Follow option for that person.  

Steps (website)

  1. In the tree view of Family Tree, select the person to whom the source is attached.
  2. If the source is attached to the person, click the Sources tab, or if the source is attached to a relationship for this person:
    1. Click Details.
    2. Scroll to the Family section.
    3. If the source is attached to a couple relationship, click the Edit icon beside the marriage information. If the source is attached to a parent-child relationship, click the Edit icon beside the name of the child. 
    4. Scroll to the Sources section of the relationship.
  3. Scroll to the source that you want to remove and click the down arrow.
  4. Click Detach.
    1. If you want to detach a source from this person or relationship only, click Detach.
    2. If you want to detach the same source from more than one person or relationship, identify each person who has the source. Repeat the steps for each person.
  5. Provide a reason for detaching the source.
  6. Click Detach.

You can review detached sources from the Latest Changes box of a person page. To see all changes and search for detached sources, click Show all.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. In the Family Tree mobile app, tap the person to whom the source is attached.
  2. Tap the Sources tab. 
  3. Tap the title of the source.
  4. Tap the 3 dots in the top-right corner.
  5. Tap Detach.
  6. Enter a reason statement for detaching the source.
  7. Tap Detach.

You can review detached sources from the Recent Changes section of a person page.

  1. At the top-right, tap the 3 dots.
  2. Click Recent Changes. (If you do not see Recent Changes in the list, tap More.)

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

The Sources feature is not available on Family Tree Lite. To manage sources, visit the FamilySearch.org website.
