What do I do when temple ordinances were done for the wrong sex?

Share

If you find that a person's ordinances were done for the wrong sex, you can resolve this issue in Family Tree using the website or mobile app by changing the sex of the individual. You do not need to report the issue to FamilySearch Support.

Steps

  1. Sign in to either the FamilySearch website or the FamilySearch Family Tree app.
  2. Navigate to the person whose ordinances were completed for the wrong sex.
  3. Correct the sex for the person.
  4. Click the Ordinances tab.
  5. If the ordinances show as complete, no further action is needed. If the ordinances need to be redone, you can request them.
  6. If ordinances show request, you may request the ordinances.
  7. If ordinances show "not available," contact FamilySearch Support.

My family name card has the wrong sex listed

You can change the sex of an ancestor in Family Tree and print a new family name card. If any ordinances were performed previously for the wrong sex, you will need to request and perform these ordinances for the correct sex.

Whatever ordinances you had reserved should still be on your reservation list. Here are a few exceptions:

  • Changing the sex has created a same-sex relationship. In that case, the ordinance of Sealing to Spouse reads as “Not Available.”
  • The person's parents are connected in a same-sex relationship. In that case, the ordinance of Sealing to Parents reads as "Not Available."
  • This person's temple ordinances have already been completed. Afterwards, someone incorrectly changed the person's sex. Now that the sex has been corrected, the completed ordinances can be displayed again. You do not need to perform the ordinances a second time.

Steps

Before you begin, dispose of the family name card with the wrong sex. This will prevent someone else from using the card and unnecessarily performing temple ordinances.

  1. On the FamilySearch website or Family Tree mobile app, display your family names list.
  2. If the family name is shown on your list with the corrected sex, reprint the card.
  3. If the family name is no longer on your list, the ordinances are probably done using the correct sex or are reserved by someone else. Please find the person in Family Tree, and check the ordinance status.
