You can print and reprint family name cards from home using FamilySearch or the Family Tree mobile app.
Before you begin
- After ordinances are completed, temples typically keep the cards to ensure correct recording. Temples can return the card to you if you request them to.
- If you plan to complete multiple ordinances for a given ancestor during the same visit, contact the temple office to review their procedures.
- If you have no printer at home, you can print cards at a FamilySearch center, or other places with public printers.
- If you are printing at a FamilySearch center, be sure to use a Windows 10 computer.
- If FamilySearch shows as the owner of the card, you must take special action. Ask the temple office to return the card to you after your temple visit so you can complete all ordinances. You cannot reprint the card from home or at the temple.
- To print a family name card from the ordinances page for a person, start with step 4 in the website instructions.
Paper
Print cards on white paper. Use regular letter size paper or cardstock. Use portrait orientation.
Steps (website)
- Sign in to FamilySearch, and click Temple.
- To print names that you reserved, click My Reservations. To print names from a family group, click Family Groups.
- To the left of each name whose card you want to print, click the box.
- You can select up to 50 names at one time. A counter at the top of the list tracks how many names you have selected.
- Please select a number that you can finish in a reasonable amount of time.
- If the list contains more than one page of names, use the Page options at the bottom of the list. Navigate to the other pages, and continue selecting names. Your selections stay selected as you go from page to page.
- (Optional) Use the filter to see the selected names:
- Click Filter.
- Click Selected.
- At the top of your list, click the blue Print button.
- Click Print Family Name Cards.
- Click to uncheck the box for each ordinance that you do not want to include on the family name card.
- To print your name on the cards, make sure that the option Print Contact Information on Family Name Cards is selected.
- Click Continue.
- Read the instructions, and then click Continue.
- The system creates your family name cards and displays them as a PDF file in another tab in your browser. If the PDF does not appear, take these steps:
- Make sure that your pop-up blocker allows pop-ups.
- Make sure that Adobe Reader is installed on your computer.
- Print the family name cards using the print feature of your browser. On most browsers, click File, and then click Print.
- If your cards did not print, check for problems:
- Is the printer on?
- Does the printer have paper?
- Are the printer cables correctly secured?
- Did you have a paper jam or other printer malfunction?
- A message asks you to confirm that the cards printed.
- If they printed, click Yes. If they did not, and you do not want to try again, click No. If you try again and still cannot get your request to print from your computer, sign out, and try again later. If your printer does not work, use a printer at the home of a friend or at the local FamilySearch center.
Steps (mobile app)
- (Optional) You can remove contact information from the cards. Tap the 3 lines icon, and then tap Settings. Tap App, and tap the toggle beside Print Profile Name on Family Name Cards.
- Display your family names list:
- Android: In the top-left corner, tap the 3 lines, and tap Temple.
- Apple iOS: Tap Temple.
- Tap the circle by each of the names that you want to print.
- Along the bottom of the screen, tap Take to the Temple.
- On the right side of all the ordinances that you want to print, tap the circle.
- Tap Continue.
- You see a screen with a QR code. If you want to take your device to the temple for printing, tap Save to Photos.
- If you can print from your device, tap View Cards, and send the cards to a printer.
- Print at home or at another location that has a printer.
Steps (Family Tree Lite)
Family Tree Lite does not support this option. Use the web application or mobile app.
After you finish
- Give the ink time to dry. Smudges can make the card unusable.
- Make sure that the text and bar code or QR code are clear and legible.
- Cut out the cards before you go to the temple.
