Help with Quick Name Review

When you review a name, you make sure that the computer indexed it correctly. 

Steps (website)

  1. Click the tab titled Get Involved.
  2. Click My Opportunities.
  3. Scroll to the section titled Quick Name Review, and click Get Started.
  4. Click Review Names.
    • Or, to review a specific name, click Search for Names.
    • To Search for Names, choose a Country or Location. Then, choose a State.
    • Click Search.
    • This step is optional. When you enter a last name, FamilySearch looks for computer-indexed records where that name appears. The records will almost certainly contain other names as well, which you will be invited to review.
  5. Compare the handwritten name in the image with the name that has been indexed.
    • Click Match if the name in the box matches the handwritten name in the image. The two names should be spelled exactly the same.
    • If you can clearly see that the name in the box does not match the name in the image, click Edit, make the correction, and click Submit.
      • An example might be if the computer indexed "george" when the text clearly reads "George." In that case, fix the mistake and move on.
    • If you cannot read the name in the image, click Unsure, and move on.
    • If you see a problem with the image that prevents you from reviewing, click Transcription error (flag icon). Use the form that appears to describe the error.

If you do not see a review opportunity that interests you, please check back in a few weeks or months. We may have new records to share with you.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. Open the Get Involved mobile app.
  2. Select the type of names you would like to review.
    • Android: Choose the location, document language, or last name, and tap Find Names.
    • Apple iOS: Choose the country, and tap Review Names.
  3. Compare the handwritten name in the image with the name that has been indexed.
    • Tap Match if the name in the box matches the handwritten name in the image. The two names should be spelled exactly the same.
    • If you can clearly see that the name in the box does not match the name in the image, Tap Edit, make the correction, and tap Submit.
    • If you cannot read the name in the image, Tap Unsure, and move on.
