Help with Quick Name Review

Quick Name Review is a way for guests to help in the computer-indexing process by verifying if names in historical documents were indexed correctly by computers. This allows for improved search results when researching for ancestors.

Helpful icons in the upper right side of the screen:

  • Click the small blue document with feather pen icon to see examples of handwriting styles. Click outside the box to close.
  • Click the open-triangle share icon to share this document with others.
  • Click the slider icon to adjust the brightness and contrast, to invert image colors, or to rotate the image.
  • Click the minus (-) and plus (+) icons to zoom the document out or in.
  • Click the target icon to reset the view of the page.

Steps (website)

  1. Sign in to the FamilySearch website.
  2. At the top of the page, click Get Involved.
  3. From the drop-down menu, click Opportunities.
  4. Scroll to the section titled Quick Name Review, and click Get Started.
  5. Choose a specific Country or Location. If you choose the United States, you will also need to choose a specific State.
  6. More options (these are optional and can both be selected if desired):
    • Last Name: Click this to review records with a specific last names.
    • Specific Place: Click this to review records from a specific place.
  7. Click Search.
  8. Compare the handwritten name in the image with the indexed name shown in the text box below the highlight.
    • If you determine that the indexed name shown in the text box matches the highlighted name on the record, click Match. The two names should be spelled exactly the same.
    • If you determine that the indexed name shown in the text box does not match the highlighted name on the record, click Edit, make the correction, and click Submit.
      • An example might be if the computer indexed "george" when the text clearly reads "George." In that case, fix the mistake and click Match.
    • If you cannot read the name in the image, click Unsure.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. Open the Get Involved mobile app.
    • Android: Choose the location, document language, or last name, and tap Find Names.
    • Apple iOS: Choose the Country or Location. If you choose the United States, you will also need to choose a specific State. (Optional) Enter a last name if you would like to review records with a specific last name. Tap Review Names.
  2. Compare the handwritten name in the image with the indexed name shown in the text box below the highlight.
    • If you determine that the indexed name shown in the text box matches the highlighted name on the record, tap Match. The two names should be spelled exactly the same.
    • If you determine that the indexed name shown in the text box does not match the highlighted name on the record, tap Edit, make the correction, and tap Done.

      • An example might be if the computer indexed "george" when the text clearly reads "George." In that case, fix the mistake and tap Match.
    • If you cannot read the name in the image, tap Unsure.
    • If the highlighted area is not a person or if the name is highlighted incorrectly, tap the Flag icon and choose one of the options. To undo, tap the Flag icon again and tap the same option again.
