How do I edit a source in Family Tree?

You can edit information about the sources that are attached to individuals.

Before you begin

  • If you add or edit a URL, FamilySearch reviews it to make sure it contains content appropriate for Family Tree.
  • If the website is already approved for use in Family Tree, you can save the source and proceed.
  • If the website is not approved for Family Tree, the system prompts you to submit the URL for review. After review, you receive an email notification. At that point, return to Family Tree, and reenter the URL. FamilySearch reviews when you link to a site that does not monitor content.
  • If you enter a website that FamilySearch.org considers inappropriate, you cannot save the source.

Steps (website)

  1. Navigate to the Person page of the individual who has an attached source.
  2. Click the Sources tab.
  3. Click the source that you want to edit.
  4. Click Edit.
  5. Enter your changes and a reason for the changes.
  6. Click Save.

Find sources attached to relationships in the Family Members section of a person page. Click the Edit icon beside either the marriage date or the child's name, depending on the relationship.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. Navigate to the Person page of the individual who has an attached source.
  2. Tap the Sources tab.
  3. Tap the source that you want to edit.
  4. In the top-right corner, tap the 3 dots, and then tap Edit.
  5. Make your changes, and tap Save.
