How do I edit a linked surname in the index of the 1950 US Census?

Steps (website or mobile)

  1. Search for your ancestor in the United States Census, 1950.
  2. Find the name in the search results. Click the icon that looks like a sheet of lined paper.
  3. In the dark banner, click Edit.
  4. To the right of the census image is the indexed data for your ancestor. Click the pencil icon next to Essential Information.
  5. In the Surname field, look for a message that the information is connected to many names. Click the pencil icon to the right of the surname.
  6. Edit the surname.
  7. If the highlight is wrong, click Edit Highlight, and correct the highlight.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Review the list of names that are linked to the surname. To change the surname for the other names, click the boxes.
  10. At the bottom of Edit Linked Surname, click Save.
  11. At the bottom of Essential Information, click Save again. Or, to undo your change, click Cancel.
