FamilySearch is transitioning to a new screen for editing records. The instructions help you identify which screen you see.

Start from the record details page:

  • From a list of search results, click the icon that looks like a sheet of lined paper.
  • From a Family Tree profile, click the Sources tab, then click the link to the record that you want to edit.

Steps (website or mobile app)

  1. At the top of the record details page, click Edit.
    • The older editing screen begins with a pop-up box with buttons for edits. If you see the pop-up box, stop following these instructions and click this link instead: How do I correct transcription errors in partially-editable record collections?
    • The new version opens a new screen with the image of the record on the left and a transcription panel on the right. If you see the image and panel, continue with Step 2.
  2. Click the pencil icon next to Relationships.
  3. To change the spelling of a name, click in the field that contains the name. Make needed changes, then click Save Changes.
  4. To remove an inaccurate relationship, click Add More Information. At the top, you see Added. To the right of the relationship you want to remove, click the X. Click Update.
  5. To add a relationship, click Add More Information. Click the relationship that you want to add. Click Update.
  6. To the right of Help with Relationships, click the small down arrow.
  7. Scroll to "3. Is the information on another page", and click Open Split-Screen Mode.
  8. To the left of the current image, you see thumbnail images of other pages of the record set. The page you are on is outlined in blue. Click the image before or after the current image.
  9. To close the Help with Relationship list, scroll up and click the small arrow. Click in the relationship field that you added. Scroll to Names on Split Screen.
  10. Find and click the correct name for the relationship.
  11. Confirm the relationship looks correct and click Next.
  12. Review the relationship again and click Approve.
  13. On the editing screen, click Save.
