Move a name to the correct relationship in historical records

Share

Sometimes you find a person showing incorrect relationships in a record index. To correct this error, start with the record where the relationship belongs and edit the transcription. As part of the process, remove existing relationships for the person. If you make a mistake as you create or edit a relationship, go to the Change History for the name and undo your work.

Before you start

Editing options vary among the record collections on FamilySearch. Determine whether the record you want to edit allows full editing.

For indexed records, start from a record details page (the page showing the indexed data). In your search results, click the icon that looks like a sheet of paper.

  • In the dark banner near the top of a record details page, find the Edit button.
    • If the Edit button is grayed out, you cannot edit the record.
    • If a list of editable fields appears, you cannot edit relationships.
    • If the record image opens, you can edit relationships. Continue with the instructions.

Steps (website or mobile)

  1. In the transcription panel to the right or below the image, click the pencil icon next to Relationships.
  2. To create a relationship, click Add More Information.
  3. In the pop-up box, find and click one or more relationships that you want to add, and click Update.
  4. Click in a relationship field. Scroll through the list of names on the image and click the name that you want to add.
  5. If you see a message about removing existing relationships, click Remove Relationships.
  6. Click Save.
