The Power of Remembering and Being Remembered

Most of us may feel our lives are very ordinary or not very meaningful to others. After all, real extraordinary people have roads, buildings, or monuments named after them, right? But there are many "ordinary" people who have a deep impact on the lives of others every day.

Recently, the FamilySearch RootsTech team asked some unsuspecting individuals to participate in what they were told was a general family history video. They had no idea the experience was really going to be about them.

Grab your tissues and be inspired as you watch this sentimental RootsTech short film, “Your Story Is Worth Remembering,” which shows the importance of each person’s life, relationships with loved ones, and the enduring legacy of humankind.

Your Story Is More Important Than You Know

“Remember” Is the Theme of RootsTech 2024

Remember is a word that means so much to many people. It’s about remembering our past and those that went before us, as well as the legacies they left behind. It’s about preserving our memories for future generations so they can learn from our experiences.

However simple a life may be, its impact can be everlasting to others, and we are passionate about the belief that every story is worth remembering.

Bringing the Theme “Remember” to Life with a New Theme Song

"Out of Time," a new song released by RootsTech, embodies the meaning of the 2024 RootsTech theme, “Remember.” Sung by Ellie Berry and written by Jonathan Wing, this song will have you reflecting on why family is so important and leave you with the desire to savor the moments we have with our loved ones, so we can remember and cherish their legacy forever.

As music has the ability to connect us to our emotions, "Out of Time" will lead you to reflect on your life and those that have made the biggest impacts on you.

The lyrics to "Out of Time" are available here.

“I think it was a challenge to coordinate schedules and gather videos from everyone, but taking that time to express what your loved ones mean to you is always worth it. You just never know how much time you have,” said Yolanda Sebresos.

“It would take volumes for me to tell every story that my mother and I share, but each one is a memory I’ll cherish forever. I was surprised that she didn’t realize she had made that big an impression on our lives. She was wrong,” commented Selena Robins

To take this concept of REMEMBER one step further, RootsTech is launching a social media campaign to create a movement of remembering around the world. We believe remembering our ancestors and leaving a legacy for our descendants to remember can help unite humankind and create the realization that we are part of something bigger than ourselves, something meaningful and powerful.

To join this RootsTech movement of remembering, you can use "Out of Time" as the soundtrack to your own story and share the stories of your loved ones or ancestors in a video on social media. Go HERE to learn how to create your own video and join in.

Every life has a story worth remembering. Our lives are interconnected through these stories, and the "Remember” movement commemorates the stories of the past and the stories being written every day, all beautiful, significant, and meaningful to us all.
