The Importance of Security at FamilySearch

Users can now use multi-factor authentication to log in to FamilySearch

At FamilySearch, the security of our users' personal information is our top priority. In an increasingly digital world, safeguarding sensitive data is crucial.

Starting in 2023, FamilySearch enabled users to sign in with highly secure identity providers (IdPs) such as Google, Apple, Facebook, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Using one of these IdPs ensures that users have access to robust and reliable authentication methods.

In addition to enabling users to sign in with an IdP, FamilySearch has announced the release of multi-factor authentication (MFA). This feature is for users who still prefer to create an account and log in with a username and password. The new feature is part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring the highest level of security for our users.

MFA adds an extra layer of protection, making it significantly harder for unauthorized individuals to access traditional accounts. By enabling users to verify their identity through multiple methods, we can better protect users against potential security threats.

How to Enable Multi-Factor Authentication

By enabling MFA, you'll enhance your account security. Once you've logged in to FamilySearch.org, click your profile image in the top right corner of the screen, and then click Settings. Navigate to the Account tab, and scroll down until you see the option to turn on MFA.

MFA allows users to add a verification step (a code sent to their email address) when they sign in to FamilySearch.org. This verification step ensures that only authorized individuals can access accounts.

Try Multi-Factor Authentication for a Better Security Experience

If you do not use an IdP to sign in to FamilySearch.org, we encourage you to take advantage of this new MFA feature to protect your personal information and enjoy a more secure experience.
