"The Centennial edition of the DAR Patriot Index contains the names of the Revolutionary patriots, both men and women, whose service (between 1774 and 1783) and identity have been established by the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution from its organization in October 1890 through the meeting of the National Board of Management on the Society's one hundredth birthday on October 11, 1990. Included with the alphabetically listed names are other known facts: dates and places of birth & death, name(s) of wife (wives) or husband(s), rank and type of service, and the State where the patriot lived or served. If pension papers are known to exist, that fact is indicated. This Index has been compiled from data extracted from original applications of members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, from published references, and from exhibits of proof such as authenticated copies of unpublished documents which are on file in the office of the Registrar General, NSDAR. Omission from this edition of the name of a DAR member's ancestor would be due to conflicting data received which raised some questions about the patriot's identity, service or descendants. When members or future applicants for membership present substantiating information to satisfactorily prove the line and service of the patriot, that information will be published in an issue of the DAR Magazine.... When the patriot's service was military, the proven highest rank attained is given; other services have been classified as Patriotic Service, or Civil Service"--Pref.
