A microfiche edition of the 1801 census which contains the population schedules and indexes. Each fiche is arranged in vertical columns numbered from 1 to 16 and horizontal rows lettered from B to N. Each page on the fiche is identified by a letter and a number. Page B 04 is the first page at the top of the fourth column. The pages progress from column to column. There are one or more fiche for each clerical district (prestegjeld) or city. Each fiche has the census returns, an index of the farm name or house number, and an index by first given names. The census section lists the county, parish, farm name and number, the persons name, position in the family, age, marital status, occupation, and sex. For the cities the section within the city, the street name, and house number are listed. An asterisk marks the head of the household.

The farm name index is found at the end of the census record and is called "Gardsregister". After this index is the given name index which is called "Førenamnsregister". The indexes will show the page numbers in the census section for that farm or person. The letters and numbers show where the entry is found in the returns. For example, 1 B 04 35 will appear in front of the name. This entry is found on the first fiche (if there is more than one in a set), the first row, the fourth column, and the 35th line. The 13 digit number will also be found in the census return.
