Ngaahi Fakamatala

Chiefly, a record of the Civil War journey of William McDill who was born in Ross County, Ohio on 9 May 1838 and rose to the challenge of patriotism and joined the 89th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment at age 24 on 26 August 1862 to fight for the Union in the Civil War. Private William McDill, Company K, Ohio 89th Infantry Regiment, was captured at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, on September 20, 1863. He was transported to Camp Sumpter prison in Andersonville, Georgia. Military records show him as CDIP (Captured Died in Prison). He died there at age 26 from dysentery on August 26, 1864 and was buried there in Section E, in grave no. 6920. William was the twelfth child of Robert McDill and Elizabeth Work. This history is about a lot of bravery, then death before dishonor.

Includes an addendum with the following five documents: Camp Dennison -- Captain Henry Wirz -- Civil War prison camps -- The Civil War soldier - What it was like in 1863 -- William McDill's rifles and muskets.

Also available on CD-ROM and digital images.
